From the 1920s to Today: The Story of 20 Caledonian Hill
For over a century, 20 Caledonian Hill in Gympie has been a place of stories, memories, and dreams. From its early days as a wedding gift to the beloved home and practice of one of Gympie’s most respected doctors, this iconic site holds a rich history – and now, a new chapter begins.
At Oakvale Homes, we feel honoured to continue the legacy of this special place as we build our brand-new display home here – a fresh chapter in the story of 20 Caledonian Hill.
A Home Built with Love
The land at 18/20 Caledonian Hill was originally owned by M.M.C. & H.C. Cullinane and appeared in Council Valuation Registers as early as 1914, occupied by James Chalk. In February 1923, Chalk purchased the land in his daughter’s name, Gladys M. Fleming (née Chalk), and built the home around that same year as a wedding present for her.
Gladys had married Bryan Fleming, a dentist from Bundaberg who joined Mr. Chalk at his dental practice in Gympie. The couple moved into the beautiful new house, which overlooked the town and stood as a testament to family and craftsmanship.
Tragically, Bryan Fleming died suddenly in October 1924, before the birth of their daughter, Brianne. Gladys and her baby remained in Gympie for several years before she remarried Harry G. Cooney, a Union Bank inspector, and moved to Victoria.
A Place of Healing
In 1932, the property was purchased by Dr. Leslie McDonald Outridge, who would go on to live and practice medicine from this home for decades. Dr. Outridge, a beloved member of the Gympie community, not only cared for generations of locals but was also a survivor of the Centaur, an Australian hospital ship sunk off Moreton Bay during World War II.
A lifelong bachelor until the 1960s, Dr. Outridge married Barbara Ingram, a nurse at Gympie Hospital, and together they raised three sons before eventually moving to Brisbane.
The home was also the workplace of other respected medical and dental professionals over the years, including Dr. Neville Wilmer (who assisted Dr. Outridge before opening his own practice in 1951), and several dentists like Anthony Benjamin Neilson and Cecil Walthall.
Through the Years
After Dr. Outridge’s passing in 1973, the home continued to stand as a familiar sight on Caledonian Hill. Over the decades, it changed hands and saw the town around it grow and change. In 2019, it was listed for sale by tender, and in 2023, the original house was removed, closing one chapter of its remarkable story.
A New Chapter with Oakvale Homes
In 2025, Oakvale Homes became the proud owner of 20 Caledonian Hill. Having designed and built homes for families across the Fraser Coast, Gympie, and beyond for more than 30 years, this project is particularly meaningful to us – a perfect reflection of our values: honouring the past while building for the future.
Our new display home will showcase modern design, timeless craftsmanship, and the flexibility Oakvale is known for – while paying tribute to the rich history of this site.
We’re excited to share the journey of this build with you, from construction to completion, and invite you to follow along as we bring this historic site into its next chapter. If you’re nearby, feel free to stop by and watch it come to life.
